Boal Fish (বোয়াল মাছ)—internationally referred to as the Wallago Catfish or “helicopter catfish” due to its sweeping pectoral fins and ability to leap out of the water—is an iconic freshwater river predator native to the river basins and wetlands of South and Southeast Asia.In Bengali culinary culture, Boal holds legendary status. It is widely nicknamed the “Rakkhosh Machh” (Monster Fish) due to its predatory appetite and massive growth potential, often reaching over a metre in length. Gourmands value it as the piscine equivalent of a rich, decadent cut of meat. It is a completely scaleless catfish with thick skin, featuring firm, juicy white flesh and a distinct fat cap along its belly region.
